Dance Competition Season Begins

Each spring we spend 3 Saturdays at dance competitions. But this year it will be 4? This was the first one of the season. It was at Davis High and we had to be there at 7:30 AM and we got home at 8:30 PM...WOW it was a long day. The girls performed GREAT. They didn't place as high as in years past but they went against teams that practice 2-3 time MORE per week. Sara dances 2 hours per week and Grace 3, and some of these teams go 9 hours per week! It was the first time I have had an opportunity to see the show routine, Shakin' in my Boots, it was so cute... I love to go and watch the girls dance they have gotten to be so good :) All of the neighbors who started dancing with us are long gone but this year, the Adams' are with us...Shane, Theresa, Cassie, Courtney and CARLI is their dancer. We have fun people to hang out with, go out to lunch with, and spend several Saturdays with this spring. Cassie is the hair specialist and she offered to come and help me get the girls hair done EARLY. I am so grateful for AWESOME friends. Cassie is a sweetheart!

A Family Vacation to NEVER Forget

ALOHA! We went on a family vacation that didn't have to do with dance, soccer or any other extra activity....just good old fashion fun! IT WAS AWESOME! Brad and I decided we were going to go to Hawaii and take the kids and I mentioned it to the Adams' and they decided to come too!! Wow I was shocked Steve agreed but he did (he wanted to just take Lori and go with his brother) but I don't think they will ever regret going! The kids had so much fun together!

Thursday 3/18 Day 1

Our flight left at 7 AM, so we had to leave home a little before 5 AM to get to the airport on time, so we got up at 4 AM! That part was easy because of the excitement of everyone. We (the Larsen family) was on the same flight as Lori, Lyndsie, Sydnie and Brinley, and Steve had frequent flyer miles so he and Sam were on a late direct flight. We had a lay over in LA for an hour and then we were off!! We got to Hawaii at 11:30 AM, (4 hour time zone difference). We got to the hotel and got checked in and Brad and I took the kids to eat and then to the beach. We were 1 1/2 blocks from the beach, so we walked down and we played in the water, laid out, played in the sand and best of all people watched! People are CRAZY. Once Lori got back from getting Steve and Sam we walked along the beach and the beach front. There was a guy with birds and we got pictures of the kids with them, Lydns is scared to death of birds, so I was proud of her for participating. We went to the hotel and the kids rested and the adults went grocery shopping. It was interesting to go to the store because basic food items were so much. Eggs and milk were so expensive, luckily we weren't buying that.....we were just buying junk food!

Day 2 Friday 3/19/2010
Today we decided to go shopping. We told the kids that they each had a specific dollar amount to spend and they couldn't go over it. We went to the International Market, this is a market were you can try and make deals for souvenirs. Sara spent her money, except for $10, in the first few hours...she cracks me up. The other kids said they were going to wait and see where else we went, but not Sara, she knew what she wanted and spent her money so fassssst, I wonder who she is most like? The market is outside and while we were walking around, poor Lori got pooped on by a bird, we all laughed (which isn't very nice). She had to go and wash her hair in the sink and then she bought a beautiful flower to put in her hair.

Once we had shopped all morning, we went on a hike. We hiked through the rain forest to a waterfall. We had planned to go swimming up there but on the way up a lady stopped us and said the water wasn't safe it had a bacteria, and there were people swimming but she didn't recommend us doing it and Lori asked her if it was 'gonorrhea'? Oh my heck, I laughed so hard...I wonder what that lady was thinking? We hiked about a mile up and then back. The kids had fun, but once we got up there the waterfall wasn't very big, but it was a beautiful experience and we of course had a great time.

That night we went to an outside restaurant, the Tiki Bar, and we had dinner, but the best part was the atmosphere, there was live music playing and we watched the sunset on Waikiki. Lori and I wore our matching sweatshirts! If you are wondering why we took so many pictures of Stockton and Sydnie??? One of their teachers said he would give them participation credit if they took pictures and wrote a journal of all the things we did. So everything we did, we took pictures and it got pretty old, but Stockton would try to entertain us, by pulling up his shorts, or shirt...at the temple we tried to have him get down on one knee, he said no...that we had gone too far with that request.
Day 3 Saturday 3/20/2010
We planned to go to Hanauma Bay. We got there at 10 AM, but learned they only let so many people in and we would have to wait for an opening and then we could go. So we drove up and down the highway and pulled off the look out to make a new plan, because we are flexible like that...we decided that we would just drive around the island and find an alternate beach and take things as they come. Once again flexible....
We took pictures as we were driving....Of each other, of the scenic ocean, of everything. We drove until we came to the temple. We had planned to go there on Sunday, so I would have had clothes on, but instead I was in my swim suit, which everyone was, but my cover up didn't cover up...so I have named this vacation, Kim's cleavage. EVERY picture my cleavage is showing, SORRY! Before we left home, we had planned to go to the temple so Brad and I packed clothes to go and we got the text on the way to the airport that it was closed due to remodeling, but we went and watched a movie in the visitors center and spent some time there. We loved talking to the missionaries. We had them take our picture, we made it like Adam and Eve, standing behind the bush. Then we had a picnic at the near by park and then we went on our way to the beach.

We found a beach on the North shore. Before we even sat down, Lyndsie got stung by some insect? It hurt her for quite awhile, but Lori went to the lifeguard and got her an ice pack and she eventually joined in the fun. Poor Lyndsie. The waves were huge! We had so much fun. The kids played in the water for HOURS. Lori and I took pictures and she wasn't going to get wet because it would mess up her hair, but she got a little to far out there and the wave came in and Sydnie hit Lori and took her down so fast. Sydnie didn't mean to but the waves were so powerful she couldn't help it. When I got hit, I laughed so hard, I could use any muscles, I just got washed in and out about 3 times, before poor Brad came and rescued me. The kids thought this was such a fun day, they would ask if we could go back to this beach. They loved the waves, the water was warm and we had so much fun. I was glad that we did this, see it pays to be flexible!!
We had sand in every part of our bodies. I washed off for 1/2 hour and took off my suit and rinsed it out and me off, but when I got back to the hotel, I still had sand! Grace had sand in her hair for an entire week after and it was from this beach! But it was definitely a highlight of our trip!

Look at these warnings...and we still just played and pretended we didn't see them!! Then on the way back to the hotel, we went to the Dole Pineapple plant. We took a tour and had an ice cream. We were so cold from being in the water. It was something we wanted to do and we are glad we went there but we won't go again, once was enough!

Lori and I in our sweatshirts again. It is my favorite one still. It brings back such great memories!

Day4 Sunday 3/21/2010
We went to the only palace on US soil. How awesome is that? It was the Iolani Palace. It was closed on Sundays but we walked around the grounds, took pictures, read the history and enjoyed the sun. Then later that afternoon we went to Waikiki beach. Stockton and Lyndsie took a surf lesson (we were just going to rent a surf board and all try it but they didn't recommend it because of the dangerous rip tides that week.) We of course wanted them to be safe so we paid for some semi-private lessons, those 2 and Sabastain from Montreal...but he quit after he got up twice. Stockton and Lyndsie did so good. It was fun to watch them try something new and they both could surf when they were done. (Sydnie and I were too afraid)

We saw a guy dressed in a cow costume walking down Waikiki, and the life guard yelled, "Did you lose a bet?" We saw the strangest people and we laughed at just about all we could. We bought boogie boards for all the kids to use and the little kids had so much fun. They played in the sand, we ate yummy shaved ice, and honestly I can't tell you enough that we had so much fun!

The surf instructor was about a 65 year old LADY? She lived in the sun and it showed...

Day 5 Monday 3/22/2010
Hanauma Bay
We got up early, lesson learned from Saturday...We found us a fabulous spot under 3 palm trees and we went snorkeling. I am going to use the picture of the kids in the "gear" on the next Christmas card, its awesome! We spent the entire day there. We laid out, Stockton took awesome pictures of the fish. We saw a girl that grew up in the neighborhood there on her honeymoon, that is so funny to me, we went 3000 miles from home and saw 2 people we knew.

This was the coolest fish....Look at the bright colors. We saw an eel too the kids were freaking out. But it was neat to see and thank goodness it sting us.

Day 6
Polynesian Cultural Center
Brad and I went there when we went to Hawaii 6 years ago. I couldn't wait to take my kids. I think it would be awesome if Stockton went on a mission to one of these places. It opens at noon, so we got up and went to breakfast then made our way over to the other side of the island. We knew we would be staying for the whole day, because we bought the luau and the night show too. It was a race to get through all of the different cultures and I do think we missed 1, but the kids loved it. We got tatoos, to learned to hula, we ate YUCKY authentic food, but we had to just so we could say we did!
This is one of the funniest places, Samoa. This guy can climb a tree and the guy who tells about the culture is so funny. He is so little too, NOTICE he is on his tip toes.

We got REAL flower leis at the luau. This was one of the treasures we brought home!

Day 7 OUR FINAL DAY....boo hoo.
We went to Pearl Harbor which is such a horrible thing to think about but it was so neat to see the kids learn about the history. We are in the middle of the war and I don't know if my kids personally know anyone who serves our country, Grandpa Scott retired from the reserves many years ago and they probably don't even know he did that? When you go and meet this men who were actually there and survived and we read their stories, it was humbling. Then we went out to the memorial and to see the names of the people and our tour guide told us some stories, which Brad and I didn't hear the first time. It was so cool to see the kids take it all in and learn. We met some young Navy boys, and we asked if we could get a picture with them and they were willing and we thanked them for what they were doing...WOW it was a neat place. I get choked up when I go there, and I would like to go back again, it never gets old.

We got done with Pearl Harbor and the kids hadn't spent
all their allowed money....so we went to the mall?!? It was meant for souveniers but I guess they took it as anything we could buy here too...This is Stockton tell us he "had a ball" on this vacation. It really was fabulous and something I can't wait to do again!

  1. This is what you get in LA when you take the red eye and nobody sleeps, we crashed on the airport chairs until we got home. OH yeah this is what Lyndsie, Lori and I got....SWOLLEN FEET?!? We must have got past Bountiful.
